Sing along with I Cannot Go Back, with every word on screen as the footage moves from a misty road, rain and falling sand into sunrise, flowing water and a path ahead.
I Cannot Go Back is a prayer for anyone who keeps replaying the past: we cannot rewrite yesterday, but with God we can begin again. This lyric video puts every word on screen in time with the recording, so you can sing along at home, with a small group, or in a quiet moment on your own.
The footage follows the words. The verses open on a misty road, rain on a window and sand falling through an hourglass; the choruses move into the light, with mist lifting off the hills at sunrise, a young tree growing from an old stump and a stream running on through the forest. Some scenes are AI-animated from photographs.
Before the first verse, the video rests on the verse behind the song, 2 Corinthians 5:17. You can listen to the studio recording and read the story behind the song on its song page.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
I wish I could go back and change what I knew, Say something different, make something new. There are moments my mind likes to replay, As though thinking enough could rewrite yesterday. But Lord, time won’t turn no matter how long I keep asking the past where I went wrong. So instead of returning where I cannot remain, Create something new from what taught me the pain.
I cannot go back, But God, I can begin. I cannot rewrite Every place I have been. Take what I’ve learned, Lord, And make my heart new. I cannot go backward, So I’ll walk on with You.
Regret can be useful when truth helps me grow, But shame builds a prison that won’t let me go. So teach me the difference between learning and chains, Between honest reflection and living in pain. I’ll own what was mine without making it all The permanent name by which I must be called. Lord, let the lesson remain, not the shame, And let mercy give tomorrow another name.
I cannot go back, But God, I can begin. I cannot rewrite Every place I have been. Take what I’ve learned, Lord, And make my heart new. I cannot go backward, So I’ll walk on with You.
Yesterday taught me, But yesterday is gone. God, give me wisdom To keep moving on. Restore what is honest, Release what is shame. Lord, give tomorrow A new kind of name.
I cannot go back, But God, I can begin. I cannot rewrite Every place I have been. Take what I’ve learned, Lord, And make my heart new. I cannot go backward, So I’ll walk on with You.
And when memory tries pulling me into before, I’ll remember Your mercy still opens a door. The past can instruct me but cannot decide Who I become, Lord, With You by my side.
